Competitions

There are a number of COMPETITIONS throughout the year for those members who are interested in the competition side of sportfishing. The club’s own Interclub Competition is normally held over the first weekend in MARCH each year. This competition is based at Spinnaker Sound to allow access to impoundments, freshwater streams, estuary, beach, bay and bluewater fishing. Based in an area with plenty of camping facilities many members choose to camp at the competition venue, while others sleep onboard their boats, use cabins, or motel accommodation, depending on their budget or needs. Most other clubs in the area host their own interclub competitions at some point during the year. The cost of entry to these competitions is usually less than $40 and the clubs often have freebies to give away to each entrant i.e. line and lures. The rules may differ from club to club to suit local conditions. When you fish in a competition weekend, you can be very serious or more laid back and enjoy the social aspects, meeting a whole lot of new people with the same sorts of interests as yourself. If you decide to get serious read the rules carefully, form a plan of action and fish hard. There is also a STATE TITLES weekend that can be fished anywhere in the state with weigh-ins throughout the state as well as a state TOP TEN COMPETITION that is fished over the whole year anywhere in the state (see your ANSA Qld State Handbook). The club runs a Fish of the Month competition with a medallion presented at each monthly meeting. This is for the largest of the species taken and does not involve line class. To claim it you need to be at the meeting or notify someone to claim it for you at the meeting. The species of the month and the progressive results are in the Newsletter. As a member of ANSA there will be invitations to fish a number of the Fishing competitions across the state and around the nation. The dates for the competitions are included in the COMING EVENTS on the front of each months newsletter. More specific details can be obtained by ringing the contact numbers given or by referring to the flyers sent to us by the host club reproduced in the back of the Newsletter. When you are fishing in a competition you need to keep in mind our motto “Sport, Conservation and Integrity”. The fact that you may be fishing to win is no excuse for breaching fisheries regulations, water safety, rules of the competition or your personal fishing ethics.
