Club History
In 1971 a group of fishermen in Brisbane decided
that the newly formed Australian National Sportfishing Association
offered the type of ideas about fishing that they were interested
in and after seeking further support from the fishing public at
the 1971 Boat Show the club was formed in December of that year
and affiliated with ANSA. The next year a group drove all the way
to Cardwell in North Queensland to fish the State Titles. The initial
ideas of the club have held us in good stead for many years. A round
of interclub competitions and social outings quickly developed and
club trips away to a number of fishy locations were organised and
continue to this day. (see Competitions and Romps) From the original
club there have been a number of other ANSA clubs grow up in the
greater Brisbane area. Members of the club have been very active
in the administration and politics of recreational fishing in the
state, serving on the state and national executive of ANSA as well
as SUNFISH the peak recreational fishing lobby group in the state.
Members of the club currently serve on Management Advisory Committees
(MACs) and Zonal Advisory Committees (ZACs) to help the Queensland
Fisheries Management Authority (QFMA) develop management plans for
Queensland. Members are also engaged in Angler Education through
the Sunfish Angler Education program, the Ministerial Agricultural
Education Working Group and the clubs own program offered to the
general public. The club has also been engaged in assisting fisheries
research by providing specimens and assisting in gathering data
in areas like the Tailor, Small Mackerel, and Flathead tagging program.
(see Tagging) Members of the club were
instrumental in the development of the freshwater stocking program.
This program is now carried out by a number of different stocking
groups.
A number of today’s fishing writers in national
and international fishing magazines have been or still are members
of the club. The club currently works to a strategic plan to keep
us in the forefront of recreational fishing .
newsletter advising of all forthcoming events, giving information
on fishing methods or locations as well as captures is posted each
month.
Advertising for private “For Sale”
or “Wanted” is also accepted from members. There are
a number of annual trophies (see Records
And Awards) to fish for and these are presented at the Trophy
Presentation Night in August.
