What Is Sportfishing

Anglers fish for many reasons. Some do it to leave the pressures of every day life behind, some just to get a feed, others just for fun releasing all they catch. and others in between. Species conservation is keenly encouraged, with the aim of allowing our future generations to have at least the same fishing opportunities as we have. The club caters for all these aspects by not forcing members to fish in any particular way, place or time. The inclusive rather than exclusive nature of the club has meant that members have developed expertise in a wide variety of fishing areas and styles from freshwater in tiny mountain streams, rivers where wild bass live, estuaries for flathead bream and jacks or anything else, the bay where members of this club were instrumental in developing methods for catching tuna and mackerel, and bluewater fishing for anything from snapper to marlin. The basic aim is to enjoy your fishing and improve your fishing skills. Developing the skills of using lighter lines to catch bigger fish and fishing for “points” in competition and for annual trophies and to gain “Master” awards as a personal challenge is part of sportfishing. Catch and release is a large part of the clubs ethic but so is catching a feed. The club is actively engaged in the SUNTAG tagging program which is a joint venture between ANSA Qld Inc and the Department of Primary Industry. (see Tagging)

Learning to catch different species is one more exciting part of the picture as is the different ways of catching familiar species. There are a number of tackle Divisions that cover a variety of methods to challenge the angler and details of these are outlined in the National Handbook. Records are kept at Club, State, and National levels if the idea of fishing for records appeals to you. Gamefishing forms one Division of the sportfishing world and ANSA is affiliated with the International Game Fish Association, that allows members to claim World Records if they get that lucky.
